You should too!
Once again, I am blown away by THE consummate wordsmith, Jason Reynolds. Truly, he is beyond extraordinary. This collaboration with world-renowned artist, Jason Griffin, will take your breath away. The Jasons look back on 2020, one of the most difficult years many of us have ever endured, and they present it to us in pictures and poetry, flawlessly fused together. This book is direct. It is tender. It is unflinching. It is beautiful. It is redeeming.
If you, like me, are still spinning from the fallout of this tumultuous time, I highly recommend this book. It is yet another masterpiece, and it will breathe life and hope back into your soul.
I met Mr. Reynolds during my first residency at Hamline University. It wasn't a defining moment in his life, I'm sure, but it certainly was in mine--and rarely do I get starstruck. I told him he was a beautiful human in every way a human could be beautiful and that I just wanted to bake him something, to which he was amenable. A few of my fellow #HamlineMFAC authors and I got to sit down with him and hang out for about an hour. I asked him what actor he would like to have play HIM if there were ever a movie made about his life"
Don Cheadle, in case you're curious.
Come on, screenwriter friends! GET BUSY!
Daisy Rain Martin has spent over 25 years in the classroom and has managed to preserve her sanity—mostly. Actually, she feels quite blessed to be doing what she loves. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology (1990), a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction (2004) as well as a Master of Fine Arts in writing for Children and Young Adults from Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota (2021).
In the summers, you can find Daisy in her gardens with her husband or in her office writing. As often as she can, though, she loves spending time with her grandbaby, Wiggle, who was born on her birthday and her grandniece, Giggle, who was born on Christmas Eve. Truly, she writes for them.
If you are interested in having Daisy speak for your school district, provide professional development for your staff, or visit your school to talk to students, please contact her through this website.
